Ellen Boyd

Medical student

Ellen is a 1st-year Medical student at Dalhousie University, originally from Belleville, Ontario. She finished her B.Sc. in the Microbiology and Immunology honours program.  Ellen was a member of the aquatics lab from May 2008 to April 2009.  She was funded by the IWK children’s hospital in Halifax, NS, to work in the lab over the summer of 2008, where she continued with honours research during the academic year.   Her project was focused on the phenotypic analysis of transgenic zebrafish embryos engineered to overexpress human oncogenes associated with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).  Ellen completed the evaluation of the effects of the oncogene NUP98-HOXA9 on cellular death induced by ionizing radiation, a common therapy for cancer. Ellen loved working in the IWK and hopes to eventually pursue a career in pediatric medicine.
